“The Little Lady Of The Big House” is one of the best-seller novels in the American literature. As stated earlier, the book explores quite complicated subjects related to the human relationships such as love, marriage and everything that surrounds them. The novel has three main characters, David Waters, his wife Hilda and her ex lover Hughie Drummond. David and his wife are living a simple married life when Hughie comes into their lives and everything changes.

The dramatic story between the three characters turns into a love triangle and the people involved go through various emotional and moral setbacks. As the story progresses in the backdrop of early 20th century, David’s jealousy, doubt and hatred also escalates about the possibility of Hilda leaving him for Hughie. The book’s main plot describes how destructive jealousy can be for relationships, especially for romantic ones if the people involved are not mature enough to talk it through and get past their doubts and differences.

The story of the novel starts with introductions of the main characters. David Waters, who has the nick name of Buck, is a rich rancher who lives in the Sanoma valley of California. Buck is a strong entrepreneur who has established a quite successful business all by himself and he has a very respectable position in the society. He is deeply in love with his wife, Hilda and he calls her by a cute nickname, “The Little Lady”. Hilda is a beautiful young woman but he quite a mystery for Buck to understand and she is emotionally distant from him from the start.

Buck tries his best to get the attention and affection of his wife but she doesn’t feel the same toward him. Things change dramatically when a former lover of Hilda named Hughie Drummond comes back into her and Buck’s lives which causes tension and drama between the three and a love-triangle situation is created. Hughie had left Hilda years ago to wander around in the wilderness and now he has come back to rediscover himself and find peace. Hughie starts spending time with Hilda and David becomes suspicious that there is something going on between the two.

Linda on the other hand is confused how she feels in the situation with her love for her husband and the feelings that she still has for Hughie. The novels tries to explore the inner most emotions and psychology of the three characters as they are involved in love, jealousy, control and unknown feelings. David is slowly consumed by jealousy and hatred for Hughie and when he can’t control it anymore, he confronts Hilda about it and things start to fall apart. Buck believes Hilda belongs to him only and he is not ready to let her form any kind of social relation with Hughie.

On the other hand, Hilda feels she is being treated like a possession instead of a human being and she starts seeing Hughie as a sign of independence and peace for her which is missing from her marriage with David. As the story passes, the disputes between the three increase. Without giving spoilers, the characters get the consequences for their actions and it all ends tragically in a very dramatic but sad way. The novel’s focus is on love, tragedy and the desires of humans which sometimes lead them to places where they make disastrous decisions and they have to live with the consequences for all their lives.

Writing style

“The Little Lady Of The Big House” is criticized because of many factors by its readers and general critiques. One of the most common of them is the fact that the novel is too much focused on sexual desires and its implications. A lot of readers belief it was way ahead of its time as the portrayal of adult sexual subjects in the novels was not really appreciated at the time.

Another criticism was for its unrealistic characters such as Hughie who discards everything to go into the wilderness and comes back to rediscover himself. The way the characters reacted to most of the situations did not seem quite realistic and the dialogues were cheesy at times.

To conclude the review, this novel has a very captivating story based on interesting topics such as love, desires and jealousy.
